How to follow DEFRA's guidelines with a small hen house
Matthew does not have an enclosure big enough to house all his birds but has moved all food and water inside and installed an electric fence and a foot dip. He took advice from DEFRA and was told by his vet that his free-range chickens would not cope with being permanently kept inside and that it would put them at risk of other infections and attacking each other when stressed. He has therefore made his decision on welfare grounds but does recommend all poultry keepers follow all the guidelines where possible.
