Donoughue: May and Callaghan have similar qualities
Theresa May is the first prime minister since James Callaghan to have previously served as home secretary. So why do so few politicians follow that career path, and how might time at the home office shape a prime minister?
Bernard Donoughue ran the Number 10 Policy Unit when James Callaghan was prime minister. In an interview with Sam Macrory for the Westminster Hour, he recalled what effect Lord Callaghan's stint as home secretary had on his approach at Number 10, and compared the differing styles of the two Home Secretaries who became Prime Minister.
He also revealed that he is a constituent of Mrs May's, and remembers meeting her on the evening that she was selected as the Conservative candidate for Maidenhead.
