'Reluctance to come to the rescue' of the elderly

The former older people鈥檚 champion, Joan Bakewell, tells The Westminster Hour that any solution to the problems in the elderly care system 鈥渉as to cost more鈥 and that 鈥渢axes have got to go up鈥 to pay for it.

The broadcaster and Labour peer 鈥 who was appointed as the Voice of Older People under Gordon Brown鈥檚 government in 2008 鈥 said she could not imagine there being a cross-party agreement on the issue, saying there was a 鈥渞eluctance to come to the rescue鈥.

鈥淲hat prevails", she says, "is the idea that...we鈥檙e trying to save as much money for ourselves as possible, and the government is colluding with that.鈥
