The former older people鈥檚 champion, Joan Bakewell, tells The Westminster Hour that any solution to the problems in the elderly care system 鈥渉as to cost more鈥� and that 鈥渢axes have got to go up鈥� to pay for it.

The broadcaster and Labour peer 鈥� who was appointed as the Voice of Older People under Gordon Brown鈥檚 government in 2008 鈥� said she could not imagine there being a cross-party agreement on the issue, saying there was a 鈥渞eluctance to come to the rescue鈥�.

鈥淲hat prevails", she says, "is the idea that...we鈥檙e trying to save as much money for ourselves as possible, and the government is colluding with that.鈥�
