Why are record numbers of teachers leaving the profession?
Why are record numbers of teachers leaving the profession? To help answer that question, Sarah Walker was joined in the studio by a panel of people with experience in education; Derek Peaple (Headteacher of Park House School) Helen Bilton (Reading University) and Katie Gumbrell (NUT in Reading.)
Derek Peaple:
"The passion, the enthusiasm for learning remains exactly the same, the reasons that people come into the profession to make a difference to young people's lives.
"There are significant challenges around recruitment."
Helen Bilton:
"They are passionate, they want to teach. You get some people who are career changes and they really want to give something back to society.
"After a couple of years it is just too much for them...parents will blame you for anything."
Katie Gumbrell:
"Conversations with colleagues is that our teaching lives now have become dominated with proving our worth."
