Why retiring to the countryside is a bad idea
If you watch Escape to the Country, you鈥檒l have noticed how many of the people planning to do it are retired, or coming up to retirement. You see them turning their backs on busy cities to move to a field in the middle of nowhere. Is that wise? No, according to the insurance company Prudential. It鈥檚 urging anybody thinking of moving when they retire to get expert advice. Prudential surveyed 2000 city dwellers about escaping to the country. More than four out of ten said they鈥檇 always planned to move away one day. One man who settled in the city as he鈥檚 getting older is The Beatles biographer Hunter Davies. His wife, the novelist Margaret Forster died last year. Until then, they鈥檇 had the best of both worlds.
