20 years of car safety: how safe is your car?
This year marks the 20th anniversary of tests on the safety of cars. Manufacturers hated the tests at first, but now how safe a car is has become a big selling point. The improved safety has helped bring down deaths on the roads from more than 3500 a year in the 1990s, to just over 1700 in 2015. Soon technology to protect pedestrians and cyclists will be included in the tests. Bob Walker went to Berkshire to visit the research centre at the heart of the European New Car Assessment programme.
