BP Cuts CEO Salary by 40%
BP is the latest firm to slash the pay of its boss after shareholders complained. We hear how investors are forcing boardrooms to cut lavish corporate salaries.
BP has cut the salary of its chief executive Bob Dudley by 40%, to $11.6 million, reacting to complaints from shareholders about lavish pay as the energy firm was reporting steep losses. The remuneration of corporate leaders has been under scrutiny amid a string of scandals and the pay cut for BP's boss follows reductions for top executives at other big British companies, such as Reckitt Benckiser and GlaxoSmithKline, after shareholders voiced concerns. We hear from Stefan Stern from the think tank High Pay Centre.
Pay equality between men and women is on the agenda in Iceland where the country is planning laws aimed at closing the gender pay gap. The bill presented to parliament requires companies to prove they offer equal pay to employees. Icelandic journalist Inga Lind tells us more about the issue.
Cars and trucks that have engines powered by diesel are part of everyday life, but the fuel is falling out of favour in cities where high levels of pollution have been measured. The worry of toxic emissions has led some municipalities towards a ban on diesel trucks, even though they are relied on for transporting most of the goods we buy. Derby in the English midlands is one of those cities that is discouraging diesel powered vehicles, as we find out from Rory Gallimore, who has been talking to local people.
India鈥檚 Hindu religion faithful want to protect animals, such as cows and ban slaughterhouses, but if meat is restricted millions of jobs will be at risk and it would become more difficult to feed the country鈥檚 population. The Indian state of Gujarat has made the jail sentence for killing a cow life imprisonment and in the country鈥檚 largest state, Uttar Pradesh, meat sellers went on strike after the government ordered a clamp down on slaughterhouses.
