The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse

The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse

Read by Helen Longworth听

Town Mouse was very fond of his own appearance. 鈥淚 shall visit my cousin Country Mouse,鈥 he announced one morning, waxing his whiskers with a dab of butter and admiring his reflection in the teapot. 鈥淎nd he shall see what a very fine mouse I am!鈥澨 And with a hop and a skip, he straightened his bow tie and scurried off to catch the 10.17 packing crate from Paddington Station.

Meanwhile, deep in the trunk of an old chestnut tree, Country Mouse was busy dusting and tidying, cleaning and sweeping, and cooking an extra-special hotpot of beans and corn to welcome his cousin from the city.听 He had been collecting food all week to celebrate.

听There was a loud rap at the door and Country Mouse took off his apron and scampered over to greet his cousin.听 There, on the doorstep, stood Town Mouse looking very smart indeed in his pinstripe suit and bowler hat.

He handed Country Mouse his gloves and bag, looked down his long nose and said: 鈥淲丑补迟 a very small house you have dear cousin! No chandeliers? No Persian rugs? No velvet cushion to rest upon?鈥

Country Mouse smiled. He was very fond of Town Mouse and he ignored his snooty remarks - he knew that he didn鈥檛 mean to be rude.

鈥淐ome and sit down dear cousin.听 You must be tired and hungry from your journey,鈥 he said, pulling out a little acorn stool for him to sit on.

鈥淲丑补迟 no napkins? No silver service?鈥 sniffed Town Mouse. 鈥淣o scented bowl to wash my paws?鈥

Country Mouse smiled again and served up the hot soup and barley seed bread.

鈥淲丑补迟 is this food?鈥 scoffed Town Mouse. 听鈥淣o caviar? No steak tartare?听 No pickled herring and horseradish sauce? 听Come, my friend, this instant! We鈥檙e off to the city and I shall show you how to live.鈥

It was late that night when they arrived at Town Mouse鈥檚 house and, as they crept along the hall to the grand dining room, Country Mouse felt the soft wool carpet under his tired little paws and the warm glow of the fire, and he remembered the cold, bitter wind that blew through his country tree cottage.听

And how his little eyes beamed and his whiskers twitched at the sight of the leftover feast that was laid out on the table for them to gobble up! There were souffl茅s and sandwiches, savoury flans and pastries. There were jellies and trifles and fresh cream cakes and a mountain of meringues. 鈥淐ousin! I鈥檝e never seen such a banquet as this.鈥 cried Country Mouse, his mouth full of cake

鈥淏ut this is how you could feast every night, my friend!鈥 laughed Town Mouse. The two little mice had a very merry time.

Then, all of a sudden there was a thunderous roar! 鈥淲wwwwwwhat鈥檚 that terrible noise Cousin?鈥 stammered Country Mouse. 鈥淥nly the vacuum cleaner,鈥 said Town Mouse. 鈥淰-v-v-vacuum cleaner?鈥 cried the terrified little mouse. 鈥淵es 鈥 oh, and the humans!鈥

And just at that moment, the door burst open and in marched a team of kitchen staff with brooms and mops. 鈥淰at eeez zis?鈥 shouted the French chef. 鈥淢eeses! Quick! Suck zem up in ze vacuum cleaner!鈥

鈥淵ikes!鈥 squeaked Country Mouse, as they scampered down the table leg and through a crack in the floorboards.听 鈥淚鈥檓 off!鈥 he cried as he scurried off under the door.听 鈥淪o soon?鈥 called Town Mouse. 鈥淣o fabulous food?听 No smart city life?鈥 鈥淣o, no dear cousin鈥, called Country Mouse over his shoulder, 鈥渁nd no loud, scary monsters to gobble me up! It鈥檚 the simple, safe life at home for me. Not the rich, dangerous high life!鈥
