Ivan Hewett and Andrew McGregor survey recordings of the composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.

He was born in 1875 in Holborn, London, and was of mixed European and African descent. He studied composition under Charles Villiers Stanford and was later helped by Edward Elgar. Coleridge-Taylor sought to do for traditional African music what Brahms did for Hungarian music and Dvo艡谩k for Bohemian music. He died at 37 of pneumonia, probably made worse by the stress of his financial situation. His most famous work is Hiawatha's Wedding Feast. But there are many other discoveries to be made.
