The President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, is vetoing controversial laws that would have given the government extensive power over the country's judiciary. The laws, which were adopted by both houses of parliament, would have given Poland's conservative government control over judicial appointments.

Wlodzimierz Wrobel, a Supreme Court Justice in the Criminal Chamber says he welcomes the president's decision.
