White-letter hairstreak butterfly spotted in Scotland for the first time in 130 years
The declining white-letter hairstreak butterfly has been spotted in Scotland for the first time in 130 years. Butterfly Conservation say it is brilliant news for the species.
The discovery was made in a field on the 9th August at Paxton, Berwickshire by Iain Cowe who works as a butterfly recorder. It is only the third recording of the species north of the border and the first sighting since 1884.
Butterfly Conservation is now working to find out if the butterfly has established a breeding colony in the area. Should such a colony be found it would mean that there are 34 resident species in Scotland.
