Partition: 70 Years on
It's 70 years since the partition of India, and the birth of Pakistan. In August 1947, after nearly 200 years, British colonial rule in India came to an end and the country was partitioned into two independent nation states: Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. An estimated 12 million people moved in one of the largest mass migrations ever recorded. Muslims journeyed to West and East Pakistan (now known as Bangladesh) while Hindus and Sikhs headed in the opposite direction. Hundreds of thousands were killed on all sides in communal violence.
Ravinder Kaur is the Director of the Centre of Global South Asian Studies at the University of Copenhagen and speaks about the legacy of partition with 大象传媒 presenter Ajmal Hussain in the following interview
