A new portable device to spot crop infections could have huge benefits. An American scientist based in Western Australia is working with East African farmers and scientists to develop a portable DNA sequencer that will help spot viral infections jeopardising cassava crops.

Dr Laura Boykin, a computational biologist based at the University of Western Australia and Dr Titus Alichai, principal plant virologist with the National Agricultural Research Organisation in Kampala talk to Fergus Nicoll about how the device will work.
