Michael Tippett’s Child of Our Time (excerpts) – a warning of the dire consequences of war

Michael Tippett began writing A Child of Our Time the very day Britain declared war in 1939 – it expresses the composer’s pacifism and horror at the war.

He felt the whole world had turned to the dark side.

The oratorio includes spirituals – songs of the oppressed – to underscore the universal spirituality of Tippett’s music and draw attention to the plight of war and society’s victims.
