Chinese memories of the Korean War
Zhang Taihua was 16 years old when war broke out on the Korean peninsula in 1950. The People’s Republic of China was barely a year old. He volunteered to join the army and was deployed immediately to fight on the side of Communist North Korea against the South Korean, US and international coalition forces. Zhang spent the next three years - the rest of his teenage years - in combat. It lives with him still.
