One of the first cities in the country to begin switching to universal credit was Newcastle upon Tyne.

Now about 10,000 in the city claim universal credit, which rolls six working-age benefits into a single payment designed to make the system simpler and ensure no-one faces a situation where they would be better off claiming benefits than working.

But it has faced a backlash from some MPs, who fear payment delays risk pushing families into destitution.

For the first of three reports, PM reporter Andrew Bomford visits a food bank in Newcastle where some residents have been turning to for help.
