Making life in the lab
Living organisms can apparently be improved with a little help from Prof Floyd Romesberg, at the Scripps Research Institute in the US. He and his team have created a semi-synthetic organism, with unnatural letters in its genes, making unnatural proteins unnatural amino acid components – alongside all the things it evolved to do naturally.
