A lawyer representing thousands of Morrisons supermarket staff who had their personal data leaked by a disgruntled former employee said the decision to pay them compensation is "social justice".

Nick McAleenan, a data privacy law specialist, welcomed the decision taken by a judge at Leeds Crown Court, who ruled that Morrisons supermarket is 'vicariously liable' for the actions of Andrew Skelton - despite the fact he is now serving eight years for the crime.

Mr McAleenan told Radio 4's World at One that the case, which was brought by 5,500 employees who said they were upset and distressed by the leak, was "a landmark decision, being the first data leak class action in the UK."
