For many the image of the Victorian church was a cold, austere, over-sized building ill equipped to aid worship. Today, many lie derelict, due to high maintenance cost, and a drive towards newer, more modern designs. But what was the real motivation behind the Victorian design? And what if its real purpose was to communicate theology through architecture as well as the scriptures? William Whyte, Professor of Social and Architectural History at Oxford University, has been unlocking the secrets of the Victorian Church.
