Stunning political upset in US
In a major political upset in Alabama, the Democrat Doug Jones has beaten the controversial Republican, Roy Moore, in a closely-fought Senate race. The result embarrasses President Trump and cuts his support in Congress. Mr Trump's support had been at odds with much of the Republican establishment, who have distanced themselves from the 70-year-old Christian conservative. The last time a Democratic Party Senator was elected in Alabama was 25 years ago. Newsday heard reaction to the historic result from Jennifer Andress - a councillor in the City of Homewood and a Jones supporter.
