Would a European army be a problem for NATO?
Does the European Union need an Army? The president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, says it's a good idea. In 2015 he told a German newspaper an EU army would convey to Russia that the bloc is serious about defending its values. Brussels has since indicated it wants a European Defence Union by 2025. But, as James Coomarasamy has been hearing, a European army would have big consequences for NATO and the United States. He asked Admiral James Stavridis, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander for Europe, whether an EU army could be a problem for NATO.
