Gwenno, Tracey Thorn & SUSAN SARANDON!
A standard week of women being awesome: Gwenno's made a Cornish LP; Tracey Thorn's got an anthem about sisterhood; and an optimistic Susan Sarandon has an message for young girls.
We begin on International Women's Day, with Susan Sarandon ,who joins us to talk about Hedy Lamarr, an Austrian-born actress from the Golden Age of Hollywood who came up with the incredibly creative idea of frequency hopping. You may not know much about this aspect of Hedy's career but you will benefit from her genius daily, because it led to the development of GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi!
On St. Piran鈥檚 Day, Gwenno Saunders visits the 6 Music Live Room to play new songs from Le Kov, a Cornish title which translates as 鈥渢he place of memory鈥. Though born in Cardiff, Gwenno鈥檚 father was the Cornish poet and linguist Tim Saunders and on this new album she explores her own identity and the creative possibilities of the language.
And Lauren is also joined by Tracey Thorn, formerly of Everything But The Girl, who has just released a new solo record. Record (the noun, not verb), is Tracey鈥檚 first solo album of entirely original material for seven years. Tracey believes pop music can be an arena to talk about anything, and her album includes a sad banger, a hymn to sisterhood (inspired by the Women's March in London last January) and a closing track which is designed to get listeners onto the dance floor.
