David Shrigley's plans for the Brighton Festival (and a better society!)
The artist talks about his alt-rock panto, some Brighton festival highlights, and the impossible theme for his new book. He also reflects on the very beginnings of his art career.
The Turner-nominated artist talks to Lauren about his plans for the Brighton Festival.
The fairly recent Brighton resident (the rain made him leave Glasgow, after 27 years!) is a little stressed, as he rehearses one of the festival highlights 鈥 his very own 鈥渁lt-rock panto鈥 featuring seven handmade electric guitars.
David wanted to be involved in the festival because it's a chance to "fast-track into the cultural milieu of East Sussex" and the 2018 programme includes music (Ezra Furman, Deerhoof, Malcom Middleton and more); circus and dance; documentaries (including one about a ridiculous project of his own, that had to be edited down from 50 hours of rushes); and there鈥檚 an opportunity for festivalgoers to participate, not least at drawing the tall and badly-proportioned star of his sculpture instillation Life Model II.
David also talks about his new book Fully Coherent Plan: For A New And Better Society (published by the same independent team behind Obama鈥檚 autobiography) which he acknowledges IS an 鈥渋mpossible theme for a book.鈥
David began his art career at the age of 4, when he was the best at drawing dinosaurs at school, but he believes that he was the worst in the class when he graduated from the Glasgow School Of Art, because he wasn鈥檛 good at drawing figuratively. Nevertheless, he likes doodling, and making drawings, and realised eventually that he could make a living with his own 鈥渟honky鈥 drawings.
