Food Banks: a new role?

As new powers over social security are devolved to the Scottish Parliament, is there an opportunity for a different approach to the administration and delivery of benefits? Recent research by academics at Glasgow University has suggested that people who use food banks don't always go just to collect food, but that there was sometimes a social aspect to their visits and that volunteers often gave them informal advice on social services which may be available to them. Is this something the Scottish Government should capitalise on to reach the most disadvantaged? Gordon Brewer discusses this Mary Anne MacLeod, a researcher in the field of food banks at Glasgow University, and Ewan Gurr, former Scotland network manager for the Trussell Trust and who still works on food poverty issues.
