Has Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega betrayed the Left?
Thousands of Nicaraguans have been taking to the streets to protest against the killing of anti-government demonstrators. They say Daniel Ortega's Sandinista Front has betrayed the people in whose name it once fought. President Ortega is a one-time revolutionary icon for the Left. In 1979, he and a group of Sandinistas took over the Nicaraguan capital Managua and overthrew the Somoza family dictatorship. After leaving power and then making a political comeback, President Ortega's rule has become increasingly autocratic. The former Sandinista, Gioconda Belli says he no longer represents the values for which they fought. She's been reflecting on events with Ritula Shah.
