Mamokgethi Phakeng: 'Education is an enabler'

According to the Brookings Institution, 14% of late primary school aged children in sub-Saharan Africa cannot do basic mathematics. So what can and what is, being done to improve education standards in mathematics and science in the continent's schools?

One person at the coalface of this is Mamokgethi Phakeng, the deputy vice chancellor of the University of Cape Town. From humble beginnings in Apartheid South Africa, she rose to become the first black female in South Africa to be awarded a doctorate in educational mathematics.
