Ukraine's Ambassador to the United Kingdom has been defending her country's decision to fake the murder of a Russian dissident journalist saying "it was the only way to save his life".

Natalia Galibarenko was speaking to Radio 4's World at One, the day after Arkady Babchenko appeared alive at a news conference in Kiev just hours after the Ukrainian authorities announced that he had been shot dead. The Ukraine Secruity Services said they had faked his death in order to foil an assassination plot by Moscow.

The operation has brought criticism by press freedom groups who have said it could have an impact on reporters around the world.
