Grace is an illustrator from South London - she says:
"I鈥檝e thought about submitting a Memory Tape for a while now but have only just plucked up the courage to!
My tape is songs that remind me of my Granddad (Nick), and also of when he left us - four years ago this June. For the past year or two I鈥檝e been making an autobiographical comic set in the summer that he died - it was also the summer that I decided to quit my job to become a freelance illustrator, and also went on lots of dates.
A huge part of trying to remember everything that happened then in order to write about it has been listening to the music I used to listen to on repeat. More than anything else, the songs take me back to that time.
I also recently re-discovered a lot of emails my Granddad sent me with his favourite songs. For example, two weeks before he died (though we didn鈥檛 know it at the time), he emailed my whole family with a link to a Errol Garner Trio version of 鈥業 Get a Kick Out of You鈥, saying 鈥淔or sheer joy in music, in life, in spontaneous self-expressions it beats any other tonic I could have been prescribed!鈥.
鈥淥ne never knows, does one?鈥 (title of the Billie Holiday song) was something my Granddad kept quoting in his last week, the phrase really stuck with my family after that.
Duncan Browne 鈥榮 鈥楯ourney鈥 was a song I remember playing to him after he鈥檇 lent me a load of old records of his, and I put it on and he just sat down and went quiet (odd for him) then said how he hadn鈥檛 heard that song in 20 years.
And Jon Hopkins played at Field Day the day before I found out my Granddad was going to die. So I went from having the best day, to the worst day, and the song reminds me of the intensity of emotions and weird rollercoaster of stuff you go through with something like that.
He was big into jazz and music was a huge part of his life, and now our memories of him. The playlist is sort of mixed up of songs from the weeks that he was dying, and then memories of him."
