Holst鈥檚 'Ode to Death' is a setting of a passage from Walt Whitman's 1865 elegy 'When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd'.
Holst鈥檚 'Ode to Death' was written in mourning for friends killed in the war. It is a setting of a passage from Walt Whitman's 1865 elegy 'When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd'. The ode was written in 1918/19 on Holst's return from Salonica, where he had been organising musical entertainment for the troops.
