"I cried. And I know what happens." Patrick Ness on A Monster Calls
Patrick Ness tells Lauren about the stage adaptation of his best-selling novel, which he developed from an idea by Siobhan Dowd, and wanted to be real rather than "safe, pretty, TV movie grief."
His ideas come from the most random of places - new book, And The Ocean Was Our Sky, was born of a joke idea to tell the story of Moby Dick from the point of view of the whale.
For Patrick, it's all about sticking to his regimented office routine. As he says: "anybody can write, but only authors finish". And if you DO complete that book, you might just find yourself on the set of a film - starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley - that's based on your ideas!
