‘Mother of Gulags’
The Solovetsky monastery or ‘Solovki’ gained notoriety for being the first and one of the most brutal concentration camps of the Soviet era.
With the fall of communism a small number of monks were allowed to return to the ‘Mother of Gulags’ to reclaim the monastery. It’s since become a site of pilgrimage as well as a memorial to those who once died there.
Natalia Golysheva speaks to Anna Yakovleva, a historian and guide about the Solovetsky archipelago.
