The Pope in Ireland – then and now
It’s been almost 40 years since Pope John Paul II visited Ireland, and a lot has changed.
The traditionally Catholic country has seen many of its laws altered for modern life – including the rights to divorce, marry somebody of the same sex and abortion.
The reputation of the church has also been harmed by revelations of clerical child abuse and the mistreatment of women and children at the Magdalene Laundries.
How will Pope Francis be welcomed in a country where the state of the church is in flux?
