Iraq & Afghanistan: Crisis Without End?

After decades mired in international conflict Iraq and Afghanistan continue to reel from the effects of it.
A decade-and-a-half on from the toppling Saddam Hussein was toppled, the Iraqi population faces a collapsing economy, endemic corruption, crumbling infrastructure and the threat of resurgence by so-called Islamic State, which Iraq claimed victory over last year.
In Afghanistan, government forces find themselves still battling against the Taliban, who are said to threaten some 70 per cent of the country, while Nato has reported that civilian deaths reached a record high in the first six months of this year.
Foreign correspondent Simona Foltyn, Jawed Nader, director of British & Irish Agencies Afghanistan Group, and David Pratt, foreign editor of The Herald analyse the prospects for peace and recovery in the region.
