Hangovers | Real Science
Here are three things that science can tell us about hangovers.
Number 1: it's not just the booze. Obviously alcohol causes hangovers but it's not the only culprit. Congeners are substances other than alcohol that are found in alcoholic drinks. Research has shown that drinks with low congener content like vodka cause less severe hangovers than drinks with high congener content like bourbon.
Number 2: we're all different. Who gets hangovers? The easy answer is anyone who drinks lots of alcohol. However, somewhere between 20 and 25% of drinkers claim that they don't get hangovers at all. Why is this? Well, there's some evidence that it could be genetic. But more research is needed.
And number 3, the question we've all been waiting for science to answer: what's the truth about hangover cures?
Does Eating takeaway after boozing help as a cure? Is asparagus the golden ticket? Or how about Korean pear?
