It's an issue which frequently enters the mainstream sphere of public debate, and often with divisive consequences. Gender: how we define it, display it, and refer to it -- are no longer questions with cut and dried answers. Just this week the Girl Guides were forced to defend their decision to allow transgender members and leaders --- they expelled two volunteers who objected to the policy. While in Liverpool, a billboard with nothing on it save the dictionary definition of woman, caused controversy and offence to some. It's a war of words in more ways than one - because it's our shaping grammar too...
