Maidenhead's own Formula One hero
It's the story of a Maidenhead man whose ruthless determination saw him beat all odds and triumph over the very best Formula One teams in the world.
Tony Vandervall employed hundreds of local people and built his own car from inside his metal bearings factory in Cox Green.
Sixty years ago, Tony's achieved this dream when his Berkshire built car won the world championship.
Ed McDonough, Motorsports Journalist:
"It was a lot cheaper to build your own cars. He had a factory in West London and he then build another one in Maidenhead and had around 200 people working there.
"He had the car building experience from his youth, and he had backing from his father who always supported him in business.
"He started after the Second World War...he eventually decided he would do it himself, and he had at the time a really good relationship with Enzo Ferrari."
