Thousands of hidden Carers across East Riding of Yorkshire urged to seek support services

It's estimated that there are over 37,000 hidden carers across the East Riding of Yorkshire. Its a figure which is expected to rise, illustrating the increasing demand for adult social care services. Hidden carers are often family members in a caring role who don't see themselves as being a Carer. They're hidden because many are not accessing the help and advice which could support them in their role. Raymond Wass tells 大象传媒 Political Reporter Sarah Sanderson how he became a carer for his wife when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Listen to his interview here. He then reached out to East Riding's Care Support Services for help and advice. Cllr Richard Harrap, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Adult and Carers Services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, says "It is absolutely vital that we give these people as much support as we can because they have some real challenges and if there's anything that we can do that makes that a bit easier for them so much the better. Social Care will remain the biggest challenge, more so in some places than others. Places like the East Riding have a higher proportion of older people so a higher number of people that need support. But I think everybody agrees that it is an issue that needs resolving." A Department of Health and Social Care Spokesperson said 鈥淐arers make an invaluable contribution to society by selflessly caring for their loved ones and we are working with health and social care professionals so they can better identify and support them. We have provided local authorities with access to up to 拢3.6bn more dedicated funding for adult social care this year and up to 拢3.9bn for next year. Our forthcoming green paper will look at long-term sustainable solutions for the social care system.鈥 There's more on this story on this weekend's Sunday Politics on 大象传媒 One at 1100 (Sunday 2 December 2018).
