What makes the perfect film score?

The former Director of Music at Eton College Ralph Allwood looks at some of the best.

There are some film theme tunes which are instantly recognisable.

As soon as you hear them - you know exactly which film they come from.

Star Wars, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jurassic Park and finally Jaws there.

Well over the past few weeks the RadioTimes and 大象传媒 Music Magazine have been asking people and have revealed the nation's Top Ten.

Ralph Allwood, Former Director of Music at Eton College:

[On John Williams (composer of a number of iconic film scores)]

"I think he's a genius, he is able to write music which fits exactly the situation, or a personality, or a place. He's abler to combine his themes and make them work out in a really spellbinding way.

[Harry Potter Theme]

"It has a very powerful militaristic feel to it...we immediately think of war.

[Lord of the Rings Theme]

"We need to know whether it's music itself, or music we have heard before and connected with. If someone from the 7th century came along would they be stirred by that music, I don't know the answer to that?"

[Star Wars Theme]

"He really knows how to write a stirring melody, he knows how to orchestrate it."
