Losing a pet: Why the grief is real

Is it time to take pet bereavement more seriously? Ashleigh, who won Britain's Got Talent with her dog Pudsey, thinks it's time to stop feeling guilty about grieving for pets.

If you've experienced the death of a pet, you'll know the pain and sadness that comes along with it. But did everyone understand your feelings – and your need to grieve?

Ashleigh Butler became famous in 2012 when she won Britain’s Got Talent with dancing dog Pudsey.

Sadly, in 2017 Pudsey had to be put down, just three days after being diagnosed with leukaemia at 11 years old. It had a huge impact on Ashleigh, privately and publicly.

So is it time to take pet bereavement more seriously? Ashleigh and 5 Live's Nihal Arthanayake speak to animal welfare expert Professor Rob Young and Richard Dancy, who runs a dog care business.
