The Economics of Inequality
The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) this week launched what it says is the biggest ever analysis of inequality in the UK, to be chaired by Professor Sir Angus Deaton. An initial report from the IFS points to widening inequalities in pay, health and opportunities and a rise in so-called 鈥渄eaths of despair鈥, such as from addiction and suicide, among the poorest in society. Professor Deaton鈥檚 work is likely to take a number of years to complete 鈥 so how should we actually go about assessing inequality? Gordon Brewer speaks to Jonathan Portes, Professor of Economics and Public Policy at King's College, London.
