Long Interview: Joe Boyd

Bill Whiteford talks to one of the music industry鈥檚 most prolific producers

At the height of her fame in 1972, Aretha Franklin made the decision to return to her roots and make a live gospel album, recorded at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. The performance was intended to be turned into a film, directed by Sydney Pollack, but it wasn鈥檛 until later that it was discovered it wasn鈥檛 possible to sync the film with the audio. Now, more than 45 years later, the footage has been revived in the form of the film Amazing Grace.

Warner Bros.'s Music Services director Joe Boyd was present at that historic recording. In fact, Boyd has made many an appearance in the annals of popular music. He was the man responsible for the sound at the famed Newport Folk Festival in 1965 when Bob Dylan made the leap from acoustic to electric. He also produced a slew of artists, from John Martyn and Fairport Convention to The Incredible String Band and R.E.M. Boyd reflects on an eventful career with Good Morning Scotland鈥檚 Bill Whiteford.
