Life on the inside: alternatives to short-term prison sentences
The Scottish government wants judges to presume against imprisoning criminals when giving them a sentence of twelve months or less. Currently the presumption is three months.
The Scottish government wants to see alternatives such as community payback, when offenders do manual work in their local area, they say it reduces re offending.
But the Conservatives here say this would compound a soft-touch approach which is already making life miserable for victims of crime. The legislation is going through Holyrood just now.
Our reporter Fraser Gillan has been inside the country's largest prison, Glasgow's Barlinnie. He's been asking the people there, what they think.
