How can we spot brain damage in newborn babies?
An infrared device called CYRIL has been developed by a team at University College London to detect brain injuries in babies. Oxygen deprivation during births can lead to permanent disabilities or death. But finding injuries early on gives doctors the chance to prevent the worst side effects. Consultant neurologist Subhabrata Mitra and Dr Ilias Tachtsidis, reader in biomedical engineering, demonstrate the detector to Claudia Hammond.
