How Britain tried to cure the Common Cold
The Common Cold Unit was created after World War Two to find the cause of the illness. Its work depended on thousands of volunteers who came to the unit to catch a cold. Given food, accommodation and some pocket money, many volunteers regarded it as a holiday and came back year after year. Witness History spoke to eminent virologist, Professor Nigel Dimmock, who worked at the Common Cold Unit in the 1960s.
