Long Interview: Sir Bernard Ingham

With a change of tenant at 10 Downing Street, our guest this week harks back to another transition at the top of British politics. Sir Bernard Ingham was press secretary to Margaret Thatcher from the time of her election 40 years ago, to her removal from leadership of the Conservative Party and office of Prime Minister, by her own parliamentary colleagues in 1990. James Naughtie met Sir Bernard at his home in London to discuss his relationship with the first female PM, and his memories of being such an integral part of the Thatcher Project; much of which is detailed in his diaries - THE SLOW DOWNFALL OF MARGARET THATCHER, which has just been published. He began by asking what he remembers about that period in 1990 when Margaret Thatcher fell from office.
