The Beatles Solo: Band On The Run

Record producer and broadcaster Tris Penna reviews the finest album releases by the solo Fab Four.

Record producer and broadcaster Tris Penna reviews the finest album releases by the solo Fab Four. Today it's Band On The Run.

Paul has Linda as his rock. After the almost home made first solo albums, he wants his band to be as big as The Beatles - so swaps turning up at Student Unions in his car with jets, trucks, huge lighting rigs and Wings Over America. Paul emerges as the first post Beatles stadium superstar.

Nitin Sawhney talks about his experiences with Paul more recently, when Paul dropped in at his shared bedsit and played Yesterday to him, as well as the album Nitin bought and loved as a teenager.

In brand new interviews, Denny Laine, as the third part of the Wings Trio has many stories from his American home. Tony Visconti remembers Paul playing him excerpts on the piano in St. John's Wood before asking him to be the arranger. Peter Asher worked for Apple Records and gave Paul sanctuary at his family home (when Paul was dating his sister Jane), so he has seen Paul working and composing at close quarters.

Sonically this album establishes a blueprint for the biggest rock/pop albums for the next decade and Trevor Horn explains why travelling to EMI studios all over the world had an effect on the sound of the album. Nettie Baker also remembers her father Ginger's attempts to get Wings to use his studio in Africa. Expert Daryl Easlea guides us through the key tracks like Jet, Bluebird, Let Me Roll It, Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five and the epic title track.
