'Why I risked my life to save Jihadi brides’
5 Live’s Nihal Arthanayake speaks to John Carney (not his real name), a man who repeatedly went into enemy territory to rescue the brides and children of Islamic State fighters.
After seeing the plight of women and children in the so-called caliphate of Islamic State (IS), former British army soldier John Carney (not his real name) decided that it was his responsibility to rescue them.
For three years he repeatedly went into enemy territory - some of most hostile environments imaginable - to bring out the brides and children of IS fighters.
He then handed them to the appropriate authorities.
5 Live’s Nihal Arthanayake spoke to John and started by asking him if anything in his military career had prepared him for the brutality of IS.
