Madeleine Chassar-Hesketh: Cycle of the Sun
Winner of 大象传媒 Young Composer 2019 (Lower Junior category)
In 2019, Madeleine was selected from hundreds of entrants as one of the winners in the Lower Junior category of the annual 大象传媒 Young Composer Competition. Her winning piece, Cycle of the Sun, was performed by Aurora Orchestra, as part of the 大象传媒 Proms Inspire Concert at the 大象传媒鈥檚 Maida Vale Studios on 13 August 2019.
鈥淚 wanted to write a piece that could be used as a meditative mandala to celebrate the ebb and flow of the seasons, leaving the listener contemplating the cyclical nature of life. By appreciating the earth鈥檚 cyclical nature and realising how much it is at odds with the modern world鈥檚 linear way of thinking, I hope it will allow us all to make better, more environmentally sound decisions in the future. The shimmering timbre of the piano鈥檚 high register represents the energy of the sun as it brings nature to life. The electronic drones represent the surges of growth and decay as each season peaks and fades. The moon bowl and prayer bell represent moments of seasonal change, which seem to appear suddenly after much anticipation. The shimmering gong and lower-register notes on the piano are designed to root us firmly to the earth 鈥 appreciating that this organic life force, this miracle of creation, is ultimately our home.鈥
