Franz Schubert was best known in his time as a prolific songwriter; none of his symphonies were performed before his death in 1828, at the age of 31.

Composed in autumn, but somehow spring-like, Schubert鈥檚 Symphony No. 5 recalls the style of Mozart. The work is Mozartian, and was written at the time of Schubert's infatuation with that composer. He wrote it when he was just 19 and working as an assistant schoolmaster in Vienna. Finished just six months after the completion of the previous symphony, Schubert's Fifth Symphony is scored for the smallest orchestra of all of his symphonies.

Its first public performance was not given until 1841, but it has since become a favourite in the concert repertoire.
