The Rhine was almost magical to German Romantics and Schumann's symphony - vigorous and passionate - is like a celebration of the river's nurturing strength and its many moods.
Completed in only five weeks, Schumann’s third symphony abounds with exhilarant joy evoking the exuberance of the Rhineland - its nature and traditions.
Having recently moved to Dusseldorf, Schumann was however, according to his wife Clara, vexed by ‘incessant street noises, barrel-organs, screaming brats, wagons, etc.’ which deeply affected his concentration.
